Timeless

Never in my life have I thought that I'd use a 3d printer.
HOPEFULLY this works out.

I'm partnered with Brandon, and the first rule we had to go with was to choose 3 of our favorite ones, and the two of us went and sketched a couple of concepts combining those and creating new ones.

After that, since we're in a constant time crunch, it was more ideal if the ideas were to be discussed first and we decide which one we'll pick.

Here's my side of the sketches:

I added some Legend to make the origins
of the design easier to understand.
You can probably find Brandon's sketches on his post here.

Hourglass
An amalgamation

We ended up going for the concept that involved these two initial concept from a week back.

I know that these two are fairly simple, but I personally believe the idea that came from these two concept creates a very interesting amalgamation.

Here's the ideas put together. I essentially added the idea of boolean-join on the hourglass.
A couple of things I'm currently worried about is the bridges created by doing this. I'm currently not too sure how it would be able to connect together.

Pre-printing in Slic3r.
The HD re-imagine of the sketches

Just screenshots of the objects before printing.

Very simple design, but felt very risky.
Update 1:
Finally was able to do a small test piece that worked very well. Seemed very stable and I loved how good the object printed.
Just a row of highlights within the 50 minute of printing the test object.
Feeling great on how the object turned out, we then proceeded to wait for the day we have the printer signed up.

So I set up the printer for printing and it worked fantastic for 4 hours, until..
Here's pretty much 4 hours of timelapse
and right before the printed failed.
..PRINTER DECIDED "IT'S DONE NOW AND I GO DO WHATEVER".

As you can see from the picture, it's pretty much Fucked, fantastic.

So Brandon and I decided to sign up for the afternoon printer schedule and decided to print the object 75% of its original design and plan to use 100% glow and the dark filament.

It's now just a glorified pen holder

All is well however as I found a use for the half-finished object.

It seems to work well as a pen storage, and with it's interesting design, it can work as a weird sculpture as well.

I'll update this entry as soon as I capture pictures of the object thus making it the final picture of this blog post.

Update 3:

Finally got to take pictures of the object.

Here they are!

Glow in the dark.

Thoughts: I was very pumped on trying out to 3d print. I am quite impressed with how it came to be, despite all the pain it brought us through. Nevertheless, it's now over.
